The Sainik Schools are premier educational institutions established and managed by the Sainik Schools Society under the aegis of Ministry of Defence with the primary aim to prepare the boys cadets to join Defence Forces ie Army, Navy and Air Force as per military requirements. 

To promote gender equality in the male dominated environment of Armed Forces, a pilot project launched by the Ministry of Defence for admission of girls in Sainik Schools, Chhingchhip, Mizoram, the newly established Sainik School from academic session 2018-19. On successful completion of two years of the project, it has been decided by the Govt of India to admit girls in all Sainik Schools in a phased manner.

In continuation of the above project, Ministry of Defence approved admission of girls in five more Sainik Schools located in various region of the country from the academic session 2020-21. These schools are :

Sainik School Ghorakhal, Uttarakhand, Sainik School Bijapur, Karnataka, Sainik School Kodagu, Karnataka, Sainik School Kalikari, Andhra Pradesh, Sainik School Chanderpur, Maharashtra.

Now it has been finally decided to admit girls in all Sainik Schools in Class VI  from academic session 2021-22 with the strength of 10% of total seats available in the respective School.

The decision is in the line with the Government’s endeavor towards greater inclusiveness, gender equality, enabling greater participation of women in the Armed Forces and strengthening the motto of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign of Govt of India.
